Organisation
Q1. What arts activity are you involved in and where do you access the activity?
A1. I have been involved in several projects, at Contact Theatre both as a participant, an assistant workshop leader and an assistant director. I began as a member of Contact Young Actors Company and have gone on to do various things.

I am a member of Nine Theatre Company. As part of the company I have performed at Show Real and a couple of seminars for MYAN; one at Manchester Art Gallery, the other at Chorlton High School. I also worked as assistant workshop leader for an arts project called Arts United, which was a series of drama workshops for young people from new arrival communities.

I was a cast member in Contacting the World 2006, which was an amazing experience. Currently, I am assistant workshop leader and assistant director for Contact Young Actors Company. I will be starring in a couple of films in the near future; one is a student film and the other an educational film.

Q2. What benefits and enjoyment do you get out of it?
A2. Many, many things! Being involved in the arts gives me benefits on different levels.

Being part of different projects has broadened my artistic scope and developed my performance skills. It has also been an opportunity to network with others in the industry and has even, eventually, lead to paid work!

Most importantly being involved with different projects has given me life knowledge, which has enabling me to learn more about myself as well as have a deeper understanding of other people. I've also had the chance to make life long friendships along the way.

Q3. What have been your biggest successes recently?
A3. Completing my National Diploma in Performing Arts and Acting was a real achievement for me and the Contacting the World experience. Also being the assistant director on the current Contact Young Actors Company, working alongside John E. McGrath.

Q4. Who has inspired or influenced you? (especially Manchester based)
A4. John E. McGrath the Artistic Director at Contact has been a great inspiration to me in many ways. The following people have been both an artistic inspiration and a personal support; Sarah Sayeed, Yasmin Bukhari and Marcus Hercules. Further artistic influences include Baba Israel, Afroreggae and 2 Pac.

Q5. Who has supported you to get where you are now?
A5. From the artistic community at Contact I would definitely say, John E. McGrath the Artistic Director; Sarah Sansom, ex-Head of Creative Development; artist Marcus Hercules, the Nine Theatre Company team and artist Martin Stannage. Also, the Community Arts North West team have been there for me. My brother has been a great support; he believes in me.

Q6. What advice would you give to other young people interested in getting involved in arts activity?
A6. To other young artists out there the best advice I can give you is to be yourself. Never give up on what you're doing even when it gets tough. Always push yourself to the limit and don't say you can't when you have never tried!!!

Remember to respect yourself and other people's work as well, because if you don't appreciate your own work you can't appreciate other people's work. The best way to enrich your practise is to take part in projects that will challenge you as an artist and raise your game.

Q7. What opportunities can you recommend to other young people in Manchester?
A7. Come to Contact and get involved! Networking is important, getting advice and guidance from artists in the industry is really important to your own development. Start creating your own work, don't be scared of getting it wrong, believe in your abilities and see what happens.

Q8. What arts activities or events would you like to see happening in Manchester?
A8. I would like to see Contacting the World happening as a yearly event. It would be great to see more outdoor theatre, bringing theatre to the streets! Other theatre venues should programme and explore a greater variety of artistic practices, encouraging young artists to expand their understanding of what performance can be.

Q9. What do you hope to achieve in the next few years?
A9. I want to make and star in my own Hollywood movie. I wish to produce widely distributed films from an Iranian Kurdish perspective, this is my ultimate goal.

image image
Q10. What or who might help you reach these goals?
A10. ME! My hard work and passion is going to achieve my goals. Contacts and networking is going to create those opportunities.
