MYAN E-Bulletin : Issue 11: Spring 2007 1. MYAN News / Other News MYAN NEWS ITEMSCreative Careers Event – Making It In Manchester The purpose of this event was for arts focussed secondary school pupils to engage with artists in creative careers focussed workshops such as comedy, fashion and visual arts. Children had the opportunity to learn about the experience, education and training options required to pursue these careers by talking to the artists, participating in the workshops and picking up an information pack. Following the success of the pilot event at Chorlton High School in April 2006, a partnership was developed with the Education Department at Urbis who hosted this event on 20 and 21 February 2007. ‘Making it Manchester’ was attended by 155 children aged 14-15 from 5 schools and 1 education group. Each child rotated around 4 of the 9 artist led workshops. In each workshop, they were given the opportunity to experience what it might be like working within each of these professions. For example, with the media and TV workshop, the group identified the type of roles and required skills/training for careers in this field, which was followed by an interactive tour around the Channel M studios seeing these people at work. One pupil commented: “Broadcast and TV (was my favourite workshop) because you learnt skills and got to be a cameraman” Mentoring Scheme Update Since January, there have been a total of 7 mentors and mentees matched who are in active partnerships, working to mutually agreed action plans. All current mentors and mentees have expressed their interest via the MYA website. Between January and March, 3 mentees and 9 mentors actively registered (some mentors are awaiting approval following enhanced CRB checks). This year MYA plans to increase its marketing drive to promote the scheme and recruit more suitable mentees. An interim evaluation report looking at what has been achieved since the projects inception in November 2005, is being collated by the project facilitator which will be available soon on the MYA website.
