MYAN E-Bulletin: Issue 15: Mar - Apr 2008 3. Funding & Other Opportunities FUNDING Awards for Young Musicians Awards for Young Musicians supports the UK's most talented young musicians (aged 5-18) who, because of financial need, may be prevented from fulfilling their creative potential. Developing a young person's musical ability requires considerable investment: hours dedicated to practice, travel to be taught by the best available teachers, specialised courses to expand musical horizons and build on skills, and the purchase or loan of high quality instruments. All these cost a great deal of money. In families where income is limited, it is often impossible to find the funds to support these expenses. This is where AYM aims to help. By fundraising from a wide range of sources, we run an annual awards process, whereby £50,000 is distributed to the most talented young musicians in the greatest financial need. We also offer a year-round advice and information service for young musicians and their families. Each year we make awards of between £200 & £2000, based on evidence of musical talent and financial need. We make awards to help with:
Applicants are required to:
Applications require separate letters of recommendation from music teachers. Also available is the £1000 Edith Hemingway Memorial Award given to our top young musician resident in the North West of England. This award was established in memory of Edith Hemingway (1923-2006), a talented and enthusiastic amateur singer from Burnley. For further information please see our guidelines and applications page at www.a-y-m.org.uk/guide.html. An adjudication process takes place every spring and awards are made in June. The application form is available to download from the website and completed applications (including teachers' references) must be received by 4 April.
Mentor UK CHAMP Awards Mentor UK, the drug and alcohol misuse prevention charity for children and young people, is calling on the public, professionals and young people to nominate projects for the Mentor UK CHAMP Awards. This is a biennial awards scheme aimed at recognising projects in England, Scotland and Wales that help prevent children and young people aged 14 or under from misusing alcohol - both now and in their future lives. In 2008, Mentor UK is seeking projects that promote healthy attitudes and behaviours and which help children and young people avoid the dangers of alcohol misuse. You can nominate your own or someone else's project with awards being made in the following categories:
Projects might, for example, be as diverse as young people putting together their own websites, classroom-based work, sports schemes or mentoring projects in the community. The winners in each category will receive £10,000 cash and a further £10,000 worth of consultancy support to help them improve, expand and share their activities. The final selection of winners will be made by panels of young people aged 14 and under. Early years settings, primary, middle and secondary schools, sixth-form colleges, SEN schools and voluntary youth organisations are eligible to apply.
