SHINE

Shine is a national festival to celebrate all that is positive in our schools and a showcase for all the talent in our young people.

The new youth culture trust with the DCSF, are inviting schools up and down the country to join this festival. We know there are many exciting end of year events already planned in schools. SHINE offers an opportunity to bring them together in the festival week and join a national campaign to celebrate the talent in everyone.

Plan activities for the week 30 June-4 July as part of Shine. Look at everything your school has achieved this year across all departments inside and outside the curriculum. School trips, concerts, travel exchanges, enterprise projects, all those experiences that expose talents - how could they be illustrated in the Festival week?

If you made a film in school during the year, you could arrange a special showing in assembly or a public showing one evening in the week. If you had a school production, you might have an exhibition and include photographs, notebooks and drawings of set designs and costumes, the stories of those who took part backstage as well as on stage

If you have an awards day include the Arts Awards or create new talent categories. Offer awards to the talent scout students or staff who unearth the most surprising talent or who have made special efforts to connect with those hardest to reach

If you have a small enterprise company operating in school, invite them to set up an exhibition or a demonstration of their work for an assembly. Ask your students for their own ideas and encourage them to consider talents outside of school too, which could include helping to dress a younger sibling or regularly visiting a sick relative

Ask what 'talent' means to young people - get them talking and thinking about it. Suggest they interview each other to find out where their talent may lie

Go out of your way to draw others in to the idea of 'I do this well'. Look through the photos, videos, art work, written work, models, awards and anything else that illustrates the achievements of the past year to create an exhibition.

Create a 'wall of talent' in the foyer or main hall over the summer term building up a bank of talent images and stories to inspire. Upload your good news stories, pictures and films to the Shine website to showcase and share with other schools.

Seek out talented teachers... those who surprised students with their hidden talents!

SHINE will offer you:

  • A creative kit to help staff and students tailor-make their own festival - including stencils, badges, certificates, poster blanks and screen savers.
  • Media support We will provide media support and a PR pack to help you promote your events to the media and to your local community.
  • A facility for students to upload their creative work to the fully interactive SHINE website to showcase their achievements and ideas.
