OTHER NEWS ITEMS GMMAZ are on top of the world On a summer's evening this July, the diversity of the city's youth was demonstrated through a spectacular musical and multi-media production. Greater Manchester Music Action Zone's (GMMAZ) On Top Of The World final performance took place at the Lowry against the backdrop of another night of shootings and fatalities involving young people in Manchester. In a media age where young people are demonised on a daily basis, almost 100 came together from Wythenshawe, Cheetham Hill, Harpurhey, Moston, Tameside, Salford and Bolton. For one week of rehearsals, the young people collaborated, created and supported one another to bring together the previous 12 months of work. Fusing classical pieces with pop, R'n'B, dubstep, hip hop and beat boxing, the musical experience was backed up by a large-scale multi-media production that highlighted a theatrical and visual quality. Led by a variety of high profile artists such as JSD & Nika D from Virus Syndicate, Strategy of Broke 'n' English to RNCM players, the young people gave an insight into growing up and living in a modern, 21st century city. Whilst the main focus is always going to be on the final performance, the artistic and social impact of the programme has been felt by the partners. Don Entwistle, Senior Youth Worker for Tameside commented: 'That is the hardest estate I have ever worked on and to see so many young people from there engaged and performing is phenomenal.' Sarah Hehir, Head of Music and Parklands School, Wythenshawe said: 'I can't believe how much confidence has grown in my group of young people!' But
to leave the final words to one of the young people, Scott Owens, from
the Ridge Hill Estate in Stalybridge: 'Don't speak to me or I'll
cry' (Before) 'I didn't mess up! I didn't mess up!' (After)
'I know now that drums are my lifeline.' (After). Young people getting crafty MYAN member, Samantha Mills, a contemporary jeweller has devised a program to work with Rochdale Sure Start youths for a better understanding on working within a professional crafts practice, to fit with their arts & crafts sessions. The young people are on a 6-week program, which includes: Health & safety within a workshop environment; tours around various professional arts practices within the Woodend Mill, Mossley where resident artists can be asked questions on their work, training and background. The aim is to empower and give a greater understanding of the diversity within professional arts & crafts practices. The workshop brief with the young people is to create a keyring or pendant based on a symbol that is personal to them and that they relate to, using hand tools, piercing techniques and finishing within metal. The participants also write a statement on their piece and are taken through the submission and marketing processes that a professional designer would have to do in order to exhibit.
