TRAINING

Keeping Children and Vulnerable Groups Safe

Date: Wednesday 12 November, 9.30am-4.30pm
Venue: Zion Arts Centre, Manchester

The aim of this training event is to ensure that individual artists and arts workers know what they have to do to meet the demands of legislation regarding children and vulnerable groups, and to provide guidance and tips on how to do this.

This course is suitable for individual artists, workers in arts organisations and local authority Arts Officers - anyone who has a responsibility for arts provision for children and/or vulnerable groups, from visual arts workshops to music festivals to arts and heritage venues.

Level: Beginners & intermediate

Using a range of techniques and a participatory style, the course will cover:

  • The legislation and guidance
  • The new provisions under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act
  • The practicalities of interacting with children
  • Your environment
  • The public's perception
  • CRB disclosures
  • Freelancers, facilitators and volunteers
  • Examining job descriptions and remits
  • What to do in case of a problem
  • Producing your policy and your guidelines
  • The day will also include a short presentation and discussion led by Sue Tabner from Childline North West, who will explore the sort of issues that might arise, and what resources are available for children and arts workers to deal with those issues.

    Learning Outcomes:
    At the end of the day participants will be clear about how to manage the demands of relevant legislation to meet the particular needs of their service/organisation, and have confidence that they will be able to do as much as possible to keep children, vulnerable groups, staff and volunteers as safe as possible.

    About the Trainer:
    Liz Whitehead has been a consultant in safety and protection issues since 2002, working with over 500 arts organisations in the UK and also with county and city councils, hospices and youth group,including groups for young offenders. These workshops have included over 300 festivals in the UK and Republic of Ireland in her capacity as Chief Executive of the British and International Federation of Festivals. Past Executive Director of the National Youth Music Theatre, Liz is the Chairman of The Company Music Theatre (a national youth theatre based in Manchester) and Director of European Youth Summer Music (an international summer course).

    Commission to inform Youth Dance Strategy for Salford

    Salford Youth Dance Strategy Group is made up of representatives from Salford City Council Arts Development Service, Dance Initiative Greater Manchester, The Lowry, Salford Schools Dance Association, Salford Community Leisure, The University of Salford, MAPAS and Arts Council England, North West.

    The Strategy Group wishes to commission a research study and business plan to inform the development of a strategy for young people's dance in Salford. This work will comprise the following:

    • Pulling together existing young people's dance participation and provision data and research, and opportunities for young people's dance locally, regionally and nationally
    • Canvassing key partners and stakeholders regarding issues and priorities for youth dance development in Salford
    • Facilitating a day of discussion for key local partners and invited guests
    • Formulating a report outlining the findings of the above work
    • Formulating a 3-year business plan to inform the development of youth dance in Salford, leading to recommendations for securing further funding

    It is anticipated that this work will take place from November 2008, with the final report to be submitted around February 2009.

    The successful individual will demonstrate relevant experience and a sound track record, an awareness of current strategies and priorities for youth dance and the cultural sector, and provide a costed, realistic, appropriate and comprehensive approach to presenting a robust business plan.

    The fee for the commission will be £4,000.

    Young people and creative writing, ACE, Yorkshire

    Young people and writer development

    Arts Council England, Yorkshire is seeking a consultant to work with organisations in the region to create a development plan that will increase the profile, scope and capacity of young people as creative writers and those who support them. The Yorkshire region boasts a range of organisations all supporting young people as writers. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside them and young people to explore the future of this work.

    Programme Co-ordinator (West Cumbria)

    SoundWave wants to employ a music leader to coordinate and deliver SoundWave programme in West Cumbria between 1 October 2008 and 31 March 2009.

    Background
    SoundWave is a not-for-profit music organisation based in west Cumbria. Our team of professional musicians delivers a programme of inspirational music across Cumbria and the North of England. As well as performances and events, we also run a large participatory music-making programme including:

    • a Youth Music Action Zone (YMAZ) consisting of around 70 separate strands of music workshop activity for young people.
    • Sing Up Communities project in 3 Extended Services clusters in Cumbria
    • Participatory music workshops for adults, specialising in music technology, 3-D music production, percussion and singing etc.

    We work with music from a diverse range of cultures, including West African percussion, gamelan, 'fusion' styles of music as well as rock / pop and more contemporary styles. SoundWave is also committed to building the capacity for ongoing delivery of musical opportunities through training initiatives for local musicians to develop their workshop leading and facilitation skills.

    Description
    The main purpose of this post is to coordinate SoundWave programme in West Cumbria, both technically and operationally. The secondary purpose of this post is to be part of a team of musicians who deliver the programme. The post will commence ASAP and will run until 31 March 2009, with a possible extension to that period depending on continued funding and satisfactory performance.

    Salary: £18,907-£22,845 (full time)
