3. Funding & Other Opportunities

FUNDING

Volant Charitable Trust

The Volant Trust was set up by the author J K Rowling to support charitable causes. The Trust has two broad areas of funding, one of which is 'Charities and Projects', whether national or community-based, at home or abroad, that alleviate social deprivation, with a particular emphasis on women's and children's issues.

Requests for information, application forms and completed forms, should be addressed to Trust Administrator, The Volant Charitable Trust, Box 8, 196 Rose Street, Edinburgh EH2 4AT.

More information and application forms can also be found on the website www.volanttrust.com

The Trustees meet twice a year, in March and September, to consider applications and allocate funds. If your application is successful you will be notified immediately after the meeting has taken place.

European Youth Foundation Fund

The European Youth Foundation (EYF) is a fund established in 1972 by the Council of Europe to provide financial support for European youth activities. Since 1972, more than 300,000 young people, aged 15-30 and mostly from member states, have benefited directly from EYF-supported activities. In 2007, the EYF supported some 300 projects involving more than 15,000 young people.

Its purpose is to encourage co-operation among young people in Europe by providing financial support to such European youth activities which serve the promotion of peace, understanding and co-operation in a spirit of respect for the Council of Europe's fundamental values such as human rights, democracy, tolerance and solidarity.

The EYF thus provides financial support to the following types of activity undertaken by non-governmental youth organisations or networks or by other non-governmental structures involved in areas of youth work relevant to the Council of Europe's youth policies and work:

  • educational, social, cultural and humanitarian activities of a European character;
  • activities aimed at strengthening peace and co-operation in Europe;
  • activities designed to promote closer co-operation and better understanding amongst young people in Europe, particularly by developing the exchange of information;
  • activities intended to stimulate mutual aid in Europe and in developing countries for cultural, educational and social purposes
  • studies, research and documentation on youth matters.

Young Roots

Providing grants of between £3,000 and £25,000, the Young Roots Programme aims to involve 13-25 year-olds in finding out about their heritage, developing skills, building confidence and promoting community involvement. Young Roots projects stem directly from young peoples' interests and ideas, harnessing their creativity and energy and helping them work with others in their local community.

In April 2008 we introduced new application materials and guidance for this programme. During this transitional year we will start assessing applications under this new programme on 1 September 2008 and will give our first decisions within 10 weeks of your application.

To receive a Young Roots grant, your project must relate to the varied heritage of the UK and:

  • provide new opportunities for a wider range of young people aged 13 to 25 to learn about their own and others' heritage
  • allow young people to lead and take part in creative and engaging activities
  • develop partnerships between youth organisations and heritage organisations
  • create opportunities to celebrate young people's achievements in the project and share their learning with the wider community

Your project must also create either:

  • opportunities for young people to volunteer in heritage

or

  • new opportunities for young people to gain skills in identifying, recording, interpreting or caring for heritage

If you believe that your project meets the criteria for this grant you will need to complete an online pre-application form.

For more information and to see if your project qualifies, visit http://www.hlf.org.uk/English/HowToApply/OurGrantGivingProgrammes/YoungRoots

Become a Voluntary Arts Ambassador

Next induction sessions - Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 September

Become a 'Voluntary Arts Ambassador' and meet with voluntary and amateur arts groups in your area highlighting the work of Voluntary Arts England.

Voluntary Arts Ambassadors is a unique project from Voluntary Arts England which sees volunteers from all walks of life and from every region of the country becoming a link between voluntary and amateur arts groups (e.g. drama clubs / choirs / knitting circles) and Voluntary Arts England - acting as our voice 'out in the field' - highlighting our information resources to groups in order to help them thrive.

Existing Voluntary Arts Ambassadors have been locating groups in their area, meeting with those groups, passing on information, distributing resources e.g. leaflets and giving presentations about our work.

They have the opportunity to meet and share best practice, have access to resources to help them make the most of their time with voluntary and amateur arts groups, including the use of a laptop and a range of other resources (e.g. posters, leaflets, a list of frequently asked questions etc), and they increase their network of skills and knowledge of the arts sector and employability where appropriate with all reasonable out of pocket expenses reimbursed.

Full support and training where appropriate is given to our Voluntary Arts Ambassadors along with a dedicated 'arts ambassadors' website giving access to information & resources needed for the role as well as allowing you to keep in contact with other Ambassadors across the country.

We are keen to hear from YOU if you want to join us in promoting participation in the arts and crafts by becoming a Voluntary Arts Ambassador, multiplying the impact of the work which Voluntary Arts England does by making more people aware of us and the resources we provide.

For further information about the Voluntary Arts Ambassadors scheme contact Paul Devlin on 0191 230 4464 / paul@vaengland.org.uk

Secondary schools urged to reveal their musical talent in young composer competition

Secondary schools across the country are being invited to put forward their most enthusiastic and talented composers for the national Sibelius Student Composer of the Year Competition. Now in its second year, the competition has been expanded to cover three genres of music - film, classical/contemporary and jazz composition - and features a stellar line-up of judges including Dario Marianelli, Oscar-winning composer of the score for Atonement and music education ambassadors Howard Goodall and Lord Puttnam. Full details can be found at www.sibelius.com/studentcomposer.

This year, prizes include a live performance of the winning compositions and masterclasses with leading composers and musicians plus cash and Sibelius software prizes for the student and a Sibelius software multi-pack for their school. Winners and runners-up in the film category will also have their entry screened at the BFI Southbank.

In addition to extra categories, this year's competition also sees the introduction of a public judging element where members of the public are asked to go online to choose their favourites from a short-list created by the judges. The result of the public vote in each category will carry the same weight as one of the star judges.

Closing date for entries is 31 October.
