TRAINING

Free Manchester Youth Arts Network Mentoring Training

The MYAN Mentoring programme exists to support young people in Manchester who wish to develop their creative skills on a professional level. Young people are matched with professionals who work within the creative industries from across the city. Professionals work with the young people on a one to one basis to help them develop their skills, knowledge and aspirations.

The programme has been running for two years and we are now ready to train our third cohort of mentors to help expand and develop the programme into an exciting future.

We are seeking arts professionals working from across the arts and creative industries to volunteer 1 or 2 hours of their time per month to help a young person.

Volunteer Mentors will complete a training programme that is fully accredited, recognised nationally and FREE.

Training Dates:
Tuesday 13 May, 10am-5pm
Then Thursday evenings, 6-9pm from 15 May-12 June
(5 evening sessions in total)

Venue:
Zion Arts Centre, Stretford Road, Hulme.
For an application form, contact Sam Curtis Lindsay, Programme Manager, MYAN Mentoring, samcurtislindsay@hotmail.com

The day aims to ensure that the children and vulnerable groups, staff and volunteers engaged in the arts through your organisation are as safe as they can be. The message is how to manage the demands of legislation to meet the particular needs of your organisation.

Course leader: Liz Whitehead, Consultant and Chief Executive, British & International Federation of Festivals and Executive Director, National Youth Music Theatre.

Since 2003, Liz has provided child protection workshops for 300 festivals in the UK and Republic of Ireland alongside other consultancies for schools, museums and arts organisations.

Topics will include:

  • the legislation and guidance
  • the new provisions under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act
  • the practicalities of interacting with children
  • your environment
  • the public's perception
  • CRB disclosures
  • freelancers, facilitators and volunteers
  • examining job descriptions and remits
  • what to do in case of a problem
  • producing your policy and your guidelines

The event is aimed at national voluntary arts umbrella bodies, but is relevant to anyone involved in voluntary arts provision (voluntary arts organisations, local authority arts officers, Arts Council staff, policy makers, consultants etc).

Places will be limited to 24 to allow the trainer to provide individual attention. £35 per session, including lunch and refreshments.

JOBS

EIL Theatre Facilitator

deadline: 5 May, 5pm
dates: 2 July-31 July

EIL is a charity that is involved with cultural learning through international travel. Each year, EIL hosts a group of approximately 12 American teenagers, aged 14 to 18, and an American leader, who explore England through the medium of theatre.

EIL is looking to employ a facilitator who can travel with the group and, in just over two weeks, prepare them for a performance at the Big Youth Theatre Festival. The group will not have met before they fly out from the USA so we require someone with imagination and experience with youth theatre who can pull out ideas from the young people and help them decide on a performance, prepare it, rehearse it and deliver it at the festival!

The group will spend time in London, Worcester, York, Oxford and Bath, as well as the weekend at the Big Youth Theatre Festival. Other activities include workshops, theatre trips, backstage tours, sight-seeing and a clowning and circus workshop.

The facilitator will be employed from 2 July to 31 July. All food, accommodation and expenses will be paid plus a salary of £900 for the month.

To apply, please email or fax CVs to Rosie Sessarego, Programme Co-ordinator at r.sessarego@eiluk.org by 5pm on 5 May, or call 01684 562577 for more information.
